Intraocular Lens Options (IOLs)

There are a number of intraocular lens options available to patients who elect to have private cataract surgery. Whereas standard monofocal lenses (offered in the NHS) allow you to see at one distance, premium intraocular lenses allow you to correct astigmatism and also multiple distances meaning you could be free or less dependent on glasses.

Basic Single Focus IOLs

The optical design of the single focus lens has largely remained unchanged since the invention of the intraocular lens in the 1940s. That said, modern intraocular lenses are foldable, meaning that surgeons can place them into the eye through tiny openings without the need for sutures.

If you elect to have a monofocal lens, you will be able to choose the distance at which you want to see clearly. If you choose distance, then you will need glasses for middle and near distances.

Premium Single Focus IOLs

Premium single focus lenses are an excellent option for those wanting to be able to see more middle distances as well as far.

Premium single focus lenses are a great choice for people who need sharp vision in the distance and frequently drive at night.

Extended Range of Focus

By extending the range of focus, extended range or depth of focus intraocular lenses offer an almost full range of vision from distance to near.

These lenses are most suitable for patients who tend have vision requirements across all distances.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an optical imperfection like shortsightedness or longsightedness. It causes blur at both distance and near. Therefore, if you have astigmatism, it can be corrected with premium toric lenses. These lenses are available in single focus and all extended range of focus lenses.
